Branch Chief, Chart Updating (BC-PNC)

In addition to General Duties, the Branch Chief, Chart Updating under the general direction and supervision of the Chief, Navigation Systems Division, shall be assigned the following specific duties:

  • Provide expertise, guidance and support in Chart and Coast Pilot Updating (CU) to district DSO-NS’s; promotes the expansion of the CU program; develop School/workshops for National/District CU programs as needed, maintain national CU activity and records and assist in maintenance of the ATON/CU Manual.
  • Maintain a liaison and working relationship with the NOAA-National Ocean Service and other significant cartographic agencies, to provide information on areas of navigable waters that need charting or re-charting, and how the Auxiliary can be of assistance. (Other agencies include, but not limited to: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Geospatial and Information Agency, Hydrographic Topographic Center, U.S. Navy Hydrographic Center, and State Governments).
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Nautical Chart Updating Training Guide and supporting documentation.
  • Be responsible for the production and/or provision of chart updating training aids to complement the Chart Updating program.
  • Development of course materials for Navigation Systems, Chart Updating portion of AUX 06 C-School.
  • Act as lead instructor for the Chart Updating portion of AUX 06 C School to ensure that all required provisions of the Chart Updating Program are covered.
  • Assist in development of observer training material and standards used in workshops and similar programs at National, District and Division levels to encourage observer training and insure standards.
  • Annually determine the individual members and units who have achieved Department of Commerce NOAA Chart Updating Honor Roll status. (not currently)
  • Develop and participate in projects that will benefit and enhance the programs of the Navigation Systems Division.
  • Develop and participate in Projects that will benefit and enhance the program of the Navigation Systems Division. Review content of the Navigation Systems Division’s website.
  • Provide direct assistance, as directed by DVC-PN, to newly appointed District Staff Officers for Navigation Systems (DSOs-NS) to ensure that program policy is understood and being followed. This is in an advisory position subject to the district requirements established by each Director of Auxiliary and the Coast Guard District Waterways Management Division (dpw).
  • Stay current with navigational software updates from manufacturers and developers.
  • Write articles on operational topics for “Safety Lines” the Prevention Directorate newsletter and other publications.
  • Design and deliver training and presentations on Chart Updating topics as required.
  • Assist in the completion of projects as assigned by DVC-PN.
  • Special projects as requested.

Skills and Qualifications Required:

  • The incumbent should have a thorough understanding of the NOAA Nautical Chart and Coast Pilot and USACE (Western Rivers) Charts used for navigation.
  • The incumbent should also be familiar with updating supporting navigation products. Having a background in surveying, cartography or map construction is desirable.
